OpenArena is an open-source, community-produced, deathmatch first person shooter(FPS) game licensed under the GPL. There are many game types supported including Free For All, Capture The Flag, Domination, Overload, Harvester among others. AssaultCube, formerly ActionCube, is a free, multiplayer, first-person-shooter(FPS) game which is also multiplatform. It takes place in realistic environments, with fast, arcade gameplay. Although the main focus of AssaultCube is multiplayer online gaming, a single player mode also exists. A slightly outdated version of AssaultCube is available in Ubuntu repositories. Nexuiz is a fast-paced 3D first-person-shooter game with high-end and complex graphics effects. It is intended to be played over the Internet or over a local network. Alien Arena is a free, multi-player first-person shooter computer game for Linux, Mac and Windows. The game combines a 1950s-era sci-fi atmosphere with gameplay similar to the Quake, Doom, and Unreal Tournament series. Warsow is a multiplayer first-person shooter game for Linux publicly released in the year 2005. Set in a futuristic cartoon-like world where rocketlauncher-wielding pigs and lasergun-carrying cyberpunks roam the streets, Warsow is a completely free fast-paced first-person shooter (FPS) for Windows, Linux and Mac OS X. Urban Terror is a free multiplayer first person shooter game developed by FrozenSand. Urban Terror can be described as a Hollywood tactical shooter; somewhat realism based, but the motto is 'fun over realism'. Very addictive game. Download Urban Terror for Linux.
Tremulous is a free and open source team-based first-person shooter with real-time strategy elements. The game features two opposing teams: humans and aliens. World of Padman(WoP) is yet another open source first-person shooter game for Linux. World of Padman was originally a mod for Quake III Arena, so most of the gameplay is similar. Download World of Padman for Windows, Linux.
Cube 2: Sauerbraten is a free cross-platform first person shooter game built as a major redesign of the original Cube FPS. The game features single-player and multiplayer gameplay and contains an in-game level editor which in a way is its main feature. Update:Red Eclipse was not included in our original list. If not for the feedbacks we received from readers(see comments below), I wouldn't have noticed Red Eclipse FPS game at all. Red Eclipse is a multi-platform, free, and open source first-person shooter game that runs on top of the Cube Engine 2. Red Eclipse is still in beta though. Download Red Eclipse for Linux. Teeworlds is not the kind of game we have seen so far. It is basically a fast-paced sidescrolling multiplayer-only game which features cartoon-themed graphics and physics.
