With VLC player and Chromecast, you can set up a live entertainment system using your PC as the streaming media.

Here’s how you can do it.

Follow next steps

Step 1: Gather the things you will need.

You will need 3 things to carry out the task-

  • Google Chromecast device
  • A computer with VLC player installed
  • A local network connected to the internet

Things to remember

You can cast videos using VLC player from its 3.0 version onwards. So make sure the version installed on your computer is up to date – else upgrade to the latest version.

Google Chromecast uses the local network to stream content from VLC. So you have to have the computer and the Chromecast device hooked on the same LAN. You are free to use wifi or wired options as that is not going to impact the job.

Step 2: Access VLC player installed on your computer.

You have installed the latest version of VLC right?

Now let’s switch on the TV and the Chromecast device. Next, head over to your PC and launch VLC player on it.

Work your way to the ‘Playback’ option located on the top bar of VLC player. Click on it and choose ‘Renderer’ and hit ‘Scan.’

VLC will now scan the available options on the network and pick up the Chromecast device. You will be able to see your Chromecast option in the list after the scanning is over in few seconds.

After you have located your Chormecast device on the ‘Renderer’ list, just click on it!

You can now proceed to cast a video to your TV.

Step 3: Play media on VLC.

Chromecast

We don’t need to tell you how to play a video on your VLC we guess! Yet if you don’t know, just drag and drop a media file right onto the VLC window- or use the long process of clicking ‘Media’ and accessing ‘Open File’ menu.

Before you can enjoy live casting on your TV, there’s another small task to take care of!

Step 4: Accept Chromecast security certificate.

Windows security barges in to make everything is alright as you are attempting to connect to an unrecognized network device for the first time!

But don’t be concerned as this is perfectly normal. When you play the video on VLC, you will get an ‘Insecure site’ warning from Windows. Click on the ‘View certificate’ button to proceed to authorize your Chromecast.

Now just choose the ‘Accept permanently’ option so that the Chromecast security certificate is added to your computer for eternity (or till the next time you format!).

You should be able to see the video being streamed on your TV through Google Chromecast. You can adjust the playback using the VLC controls from your computer.

Congrats!

That’s it! You have just succeeded in streaming from VLC to Chromecast. But are you having troubles playing videos or getting irritating errors? Maybe a few things that can help you out!

What if I can’t see videos on Chromecast?

You have to keep in mind that this casting feature of VLC is quite recent and still in development. It’s common to get few errors or face problems in playing videos like low-quality, skipped frames and so on.

You may also need to convert some media file types before you can cast them on Chromecast. The process can take a long time if you use VLC’s converter so it’s better to use some other solution.

Any firewall or security applications like VPN may also cause troubles. Grant Chromecast the necessary permissions and exceptions so that you don’t face such problems.

Alternate way to stream from VLC to Chromecast

There is also another way you can cast videos from desktop to Chromecast. Use your Google Chrome browser with Cast extension and use the ‘cast desktop’ option to stream your desktop on your TV.

Now play a video on VLC or any media player and have it streamed directly to your TV via Chromecast. But this process may compromise on video quality for faster playback speed.

Hi Everybody,
I try to search the forum but could not find anybody else with this problem.
Whenever I try to cast trough VLC, the screen on my tv becomes black and the title of the file that I am trying to play appears, but nothing else for a couple of minute.
This is until a message pops up from vlc on my laptop : Casting requires conversion and can drain battery.
I select OK.
At times, the casting icon appears on the screen and then disappear to go back to the file name.Mac
Nothing else happens
First of all:
-The chromecast is working fine with youtube, screen mirroring through chrome and other applications
- I tried to cast vlc at my parents house and it is working ( with their older laptop)
- I have played both mkv and mp4 file with the same result (black screen with title)
- With Soda Player I was able to cast some files, but I would love to use VLC
I have windows 7
The latest version of VLC 3.04
ChromecastBT smart hub type A is my Router.
Here is an extract of the log file (could not fit it all with the 2000 characters limit, ..). The Stale Plugins Cache error is repeated thousands times..
To help you, we need messages, to completely understand what your problems is.
From windows command line or linux or macos terminal, launch vlc with options -vv and --logfile=file
  • Windows example: vlc.exe -vv --logfile=c:vlclog.txt
  • Linux example: vlc -vv --logfile=vlclog.txt, or vlc -vv 2>&1 > logfile.txt
Then paste the full resulting log here between [code]and[/code] (or use Pastebin.com if it's too long)
Also don't forget to name your Operating System

and provide the VLC media player version.
